The original title of this collection was Al-Musnad al-Sahih ala al-Taqasim wa al-Anwa ("The Authentic Musnad according to Divisions and Types"). Authored by the Shafi'i polymath (d. 965 CE), the work was specifically designed to exclude weak (da'if) narrations, a standard shared by only a few elite collections.
